Los Alamos County Hits 47% Diversion
Rate By Recycling Concrete!
In Los Alamos County's recently published 2005
Recycling Report, developed by Regina Wheeler, Manager of the Los Alamos Solid
Waste Division, the recycling rate for 2005 saw an 11% recycling rate measured
by weight, without concrete recycling. With that weight added in, the tally came
to 47%! The concrete and asphalt brought to the landfill in segregated loads was
crushed and used as base course. It is noted that the past year saw an
extraordinary amount of concrete due to a major local reconstruction project.
The report includes analysis on the Volume and
Cost of Recycling by material.

NEW TIRE
RECYCLING FACILITY IN ALBUQUERQUE HAS GRAND OPENING ON EARTH DAY
In conjunction with the 36th
annual earth day, JaiTire is having an open house to celebrate the opening of
its new tire recycling facility in Albuquerque. JaiTire takes old tires and
recycles them into various size crumb rubber particles which are used in a
variety of landscape materials and safety surfacing . JaiTire has been
recycling tires in Denver since 1993. When their business grew and required
larger equipment, they moved their existing equipment down to Albuquerque. The
new facility had a shredder, granulator, sizing, and fiber and metal removing
equipment.
The recycled tire pieces are
used in a variety of products - landscape mulch, playground cover, poured in
place surfacing, horse arena footing, grass topdressing, and infill for
artificial turf. The playground material which comes in black and 7 different
colors is perfect for schools or home playground equipment. The resilience from
the rubber makes it the safest playground surfacing available.
The landscape mulch is a
larger size rubber that comes in three colors. This very attractive mulch does
not decay or blow away, reduces water evaporation by up to 60%, maintains its
color for years, and does not attract insects. The horse arena footing reduces
the concussive shock to the horse and rider, retards the breakdown of the sand
into dust, and reduces maintenance. E. Gifford Stack, an Outreach Manager with
the New Mexico Environment Department, noted, “With the opening of this facility
we are pleased to see an exciting new approach to tire recycling in New Mexico.
Hopefully, this operation will help reduce the number of tires going to
landfills or illegally dumped in arroyos.” Open House at 3417 GIRARD NE,
ALBUQUERQUE, NM, April 21 12-5 PM.
Celebrate International Compost
Awareness Week, May 7-13
International Compost Awareness Week (ICAW) is a multi-media publicity and
education initiative to showcase compost production and demonstrate compost
use. For the past five years Compost Awareness Week has grown in both
strength and numbers through its sponsors and
compost advocates. Compost Awareness Week serves the important role of
bringing the Compost! message to the attention of the public, businesses and
other groups. Communities and government agencies, as well as members of the
composting and "green" industries, utilize the week to promote their
specific Compost! messages and programs.
Be
a part of the largest environmental education event for composting. The U.S.
Composting Council officially invites you to join in celebrating
International Compost Awareness Week. Across the United States, Canada
and the UK, composting advocates will be encouraging everyone to Compost!
This year’s national poster theme, “The Possibilities Are Endless –
Compost!” is a great way to get the message out. All types of composting and
compost use projects, from “do it yourself” composting in your backyard to
large-scale, community-wide projects are promoted during this week.
To find out what’s
going on in your area - visit
www.compostingcouncil.org

states, counties and cities, and public service announcements for the
weeklong event.
